Open Skate Offers Positive Activity & Connection for All Ages

MOST Simley High School and Inver Grove Heights Middle School students choose NOT to drink alcohol or vape when hanging out with friends*. The free Open Skate event, hosted by the Inver Grove Heights Spartan Prevention, Advocacy, and Resource Coalition (IGH SPARC) and Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation, offered a way for families to connect and a positive activity for all kids.

More than 100 families and children of all ages skated at the Veterans Memorial Community Center ice arena. Throughout the night, parents and relatives taught young children to skate and practiced fundamentals with their avid ice skaters and hockey players. Middle and high school attendees got together with friends to skate and show off their skills. IGH SPARC also provided hot cocoa to help skaters warm up. The event was a great opportunity for families and friends to connect.

IGH SPARC uses the research-based Positive Community Norms (PCN) framework to decrease the use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana by youth to improve the long-term overall health of the Inver Grove Heights community. Through the PCN framework, the coalition focuses on using data to show Inver Grove Heights Schools (ISD 199) students that MOST of their peers DON’T drink alcohol, vape, or use marijuana*, even if they think their peers do. LA MAYORÍA de los estudiantes de Simley High School e Inver Grove Heights Middle School eligen NO beber alcohol ni vapear cuando salen con amigos*. El evento gratuito Open Skate, organizado por la Coalición Spartan de Prevención, Defensa y Recursos de Inver Grove Heights (IGH SPARC) y Parques y Recreación de Inver Grove Heights, ofreció una forma para que las familias se conectaran y una actividad positiva para todos los niños.

Más de 100 familias y niños de todas las edades patinaron en la pista de hielo del Veterans Memorial Community Center. A lo largo de la noche, padres y familiares enseñaron a los niños pequeños a patinar y practicaron los fundamentos con sus ávidos patinadores sobre hielo y jugadores de hockey. Los asistentes de intermedia y secundaria se reunieron con amigos para patinar y mostrar sus habilidades. IGH SPARC también proporcionó chocolate caliente para ayudar a los patinadores a calentar. El evento fue una gran oportunidad para que familias y amigos se conectaran.
