Students Present to IGH City Council
IGH SPARC accompanied Simley High School students to the May 6 Inver Grove Heights City Council Meeting. The students are members of the Students Against Vaping Effort (SAVE), which resulted from a collaboration between IGH SPARC and a member organization, the Tobacco Free Alliance. The Tobacco Free Alliance, a youth-serving organization that strives to educate and make policy changes, leads SAVE and helped them get an opportunity to ask for the Inver Grove Heights City Council’s support to ban the sale of flavored tobacco products in the city.
Simley students Sheriden Eberhardt, Vasi Leckas, Chris Flores, and Nadeen Orlova presented at the meeting. The students that could not be there put together a video to share during the meeting.
Multiple council members expressed how impressed they were with students and also expressed that their eyes have been opened to the issues with vaping that our youth and schools are facing.
Simley Assistant Principal Matt Drugg composed a letter on this issue as well that was given to the council. Inver Grove Heights Schools School Resource Officer and Inver Grove Heights Police Officer Ericka Eid also spoke in support of the student request.
Great job, Simley students!
